The day I lost the race!!
Now this is a typical "George" story!! And its a good job I can laugh at
myself!! It happened on Phillip Island on the Sunday of the world super bike
race. I had been camping in the camp site for two days expecting it to be the
same as Brands Hatch in the UK. Lots to do and see etc etc but it was nothing
like it!! Only small local bands playing no big fairground (not that I like
fairgrounds) and hardly any attractions especially in the evenings. the weather
was the usual Phillip Island mix, one day was cold and wet and the next very
very hot!! By the time I spotted my friends from the hostel Scott and Viv the
first race was starting. I had followed the qualifying and the superpole
properly and was very pleased with my new knowledge of the racing etc. Let me
point out that I had awoken in the morning to rain and wind and had decided to
not camp another night at the track but to head back to "Amaroo" (backpacker
hostel) and shower etc. So I had packed the bike up and was ready to go straight
after the last race. We watched the first race and afterwards walked around the
track for a while in the ever increasing wind. Scott and Viv had to be back at
work before 5.00 and the second race was at 4.00. The wind was getting very
strong and blowing over nasty looking clouds. I decided to head back to the
hostel with Scott and Viv, get washed and changed and watch the second race from
the comfort of the lounge. Sounds crazy I know but I find it easier to follow
the race from a TV screen and the weather didn’t look good at all. I headed back
to the campground where all the tents had blown flat!!! But the FJ stood waiting
patiently to go home. So I rode back to Cowes and "Amaroo", had a well needed
shower and a shave. I went down to Scott and Viv's trailer and sat watching the
TV, lots of car racing on and just waited for it to turn to the bikes. Hmmm got
to 3.30 and still no bikes!! So I wandered up to the main building and asked if
they would put it on the TV. Arrrgggg it was on Fox TV (cable) and not available
at the hostel!!! They very kindly phoned a few places but no one had it. "Now" I
hear you say why didn’t you jump on Fanny and ride back?? Well I had a few
glasses of wine after my shower and chilled out ready for the race. So there I
was running down the deserted high street in Cowes hunting for a screen with it
showing!! No such luck and after a pretty thorough search of the town I gave up
and wandered into the Irish pub for a pint. Bless them they tried in there as
well to get it on their TV but no way was it happening :-( it did
make me laugh tho, for ages!!!
