Indiana George and the curse of the sacred stones.
The sun was rapidly setting, he had to move fast. He had circled the great rock
twice, once to get his bearings and to check for "Giribany" guards and the
second time as a precaution. You couldn't afford to make any mistakes in his
profession. And experience told him you can’t be too careful with the local
customs and laws. To circle three times would have drawn suspicion and once was
not enough. Having been in the "Exploring game" for over fifteen years this man
was good at his job. On the second pass of what he considered the optimum drop
zone he pulled the big 1200cc yaham-aha to an abrupt holt. He dismounted, his
eyes scanned the bush like lasers for life. No sooner was he off the bike and
with speed more becoming of a twenty year old athlete, he had the heavily worn
backpack off and undone and the incriminating contents was at his disposal.
Simulating a huge yawn he tossed the 3 rocks towards the mountain of red
towering over him. He looked round to the bush, no response from anywhere, it
seemed his luck was holding. He waited maybe 2 or 3 minutes before sliding to
the back of the bike and undoing the solar powered beer cooler and after
securing the beer in his stubby holder he drunk. Two days previously in a town
called "Alice" 2 young women had approached him individually and told him of
their terrible mistake and pleaded with him to help. It seemed that in the
"outback" as they call it laid a huge rock called "Uluru" that the locals "Giribanys"
or "Aborigines" as they are sometimes called call sacred. Whilst climbing the
"rock" one of them had shall we say... Removed a part of it and a similar story
for the other young lady!! Whilst talking to some people of Alice one night over
some grog they where told of the terrible fate of those who remove part of the
great rock!! And my job was to lug it all the way back and deposit it. Still
teaches me for winding them up in the first place!!!!
Uluru was awesome as were the Olgas, a strange sight in the desert for sure. I
sat and watched the sunset on Uluru and saw it change color from red to blue to
different shades of red again amazing. And then on to Kings Canyon before
heading back to Alice. It took 3 days to get down there see the sights and get
back to Alice and I reckon I covered over 1300k there and back. I am now back in
good old Alice Springs and am helping run the Alice Lodge Backpackers for a few
weeks before I fly out. The bike is advertised in the local paper and the "Post"
down in Sydney 4000k's away. So that if I don’t sell her here I can do so in New
South Wales before I depart. So as my Australian adventure comes to an end I
have found a real nice way to chill and get ready for the next stage. I had the
best time believe it or not working with "Central Plant" in Alice Springs laying
concrete for a few weeks! Really really, hard work and we laid so much concrete
in those weeks even the local "Ready Mix" plant had enough one weekend!! 600
cubic meters of concrete in less than two weeks and after 6.00am starts and
8.00pm finishes sometimes I was ready for a rest. Its all good tho :-)
